Passover Seder at Habonim Shul

April 2001

12 members of the Tengye Ling community were guests for a Jewish Seder for the second night of Passover, the "Feast of Freedom" which celebrates the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt.  We were guests at the Shul of Rabbi Eli Rubenstein, the Habonim Congregation.  This was a community Seder, with many people in attendance.  Eli co-led the evening with Abram, both Jewish storytellers, and so the evening was filled with stories to explain the meaning of this most widely observed Jewish ritual meal.  We learned about the meaning and preparation of the matzah, and the other symbolic foods eaten at this meal.  Also, many people shared their thoughts about the symbols of the story, such as the Ten Plagues, and we were invited to add our own plagues to the list: we included the Three Poisons of ignorance, hatred and desire.  From the Exodus story and our personal stories, we learned that we all share the same feeling of wanting freedom from oppression and that this freedom is a state of mind that we wish for all beings.  Then, matzah ball soup for everyone!  Afterwards, Rabbi Eli gave Gen-la and the rest of us a glimpse inside the Ark, and even opened one of the Torah Scrolls for us to see.  Gen-la then spoke about the oppressor that we all have inside of us, which we need to recognize and work to eliminate.  It was a profound meeting of spiritual brethren.
