Uprising Day Fri. Mar 9 and Sat. Mar 10 2001 Organized by Canada Tibet Committee and Candian Tibetan Association of Ontario On the evening of Fri. Mar. 9, 20 Tibetans and Friends of Tibet began a 24 hour hunger strike for a Free Tibet. Each hour a bell was struck to represent and remember 50 000 Tibetans who have died as a result of the Chinese communist illegal occupation of Tibet, totalling 1.2 million. A candle-light vigil was held with prayers. The next morning we gathered at Queen's Park to start our Freedom March to the Chinese Consulate. The first leg of the walk was done gagged with our message "Stop the Silence". The remainder of the walk filled the streets of Toronto with shouts of "Free Tibet! China Out!" A van with a loudspeaker followed along, and when we reached the Hyatt Hotel where the IOC members were staying, we were able to let them know that we want "No Olympics in Beijing!". The rest of the day was spent in front of the Chinese Consulate singing freedom songs, chanting prayer and shouting slogans. Hundreds of people were present. Our theme was "Stop the Genocide in Tibet, Start Negotiations with His Holiness The Dalai Lama". May this be the last protest, and Tibet have freedom NOW! On Sun. Mar. 11, two rallies were held to protest the Beijing Olympic Bid for the 2008 Games. One was held where the IOC members dined with Prime Minister Jean Chretian and Premier Mike Harris. Our voice was heard...No Olympics in China, Until Tibet is Free!!
